iPhone 5 and AT&T Text Plan Issue

I was excited to purchase my iPhone 5 back in September. Not a person to wait in long lines, I opted to purchase mine online via apple.com. When I got to the checkout process, I noticed they were forcing me to choose a different text plan from the one I had previously. I had a $5 for 200 messages a month plan. During checkout I had only two options: unlimited for $20, or pay as you go texts for .20 cents a message of text, and .30 cents for video and pictures.

Needless to say, I was distressed. This meant I could no longer keep my $5 rate, and there was no way I needed unlimited. I canceled my order, and proceeded to AT&T’s site to make my purchase there instead. Unfortunately, their site crashed on me during checkout. So, I went back to the apple site… The same thing happened to me where I could not choose my original texting plan. After much googling, I determined it would probably be OK to choose the pay as you go option and then call AT&T to adjust it.

I did an online support chat session with AT&T before my phone arrived and was assured I’d be able to keep my original text plan. However, when I saw my recent bill, it stated that beginning on September 27th, I’d be charged per text with the pay as you go text plan. I went online to chat again with AT&T support, and mentioned on 9/17/12 I was told everything would be fine. This new support person opened a case for me. In all truth, if I’d known I’d be losing the text plan, I think I might have looked into another phone.

Today, I received an email saying my issue was resolved. It didn’t mention what the resolution was, so I called just to make sure. End result: They said I can keep the $5 for 200 texts plan. I probably could have saved some time by going to an AT&T store in person to buy the phone, or I should have just got another phone. This phone needs to last me a while since I don’t intend to upgrade in another two years unless I have to. But, I think I want to try a new phone next time.

Just wanted to post this for anyone else having the same problem.
