Hina Matsuri – Happy Girl’s Day

March 3rd is Girl’s Day, and this year, I decided to get a doll for my niece to mark the occasion. She’s almost three years old, and is a great and happy kid that brings smiles to a lot of faces. It’s her charm. She’s adorable, and pretty quirky and smart. She’s got a way with people, and her smile. wow. It’s a disarming smile. I’m just a sucker for her toddler ways.

In Hawaii, a lot of people celebrate Girl’s Day in some way, whether or not they’re Japanese. Around Girl’s Day, you’ll see displays in some Local stores, and in elementary school I remember we celebrated both Girl’s and Boy’s Day in different ways… I vaguely remember making a paper koi on a stick for Boy’s Day, or one of my teachers had the boys put up our chairs at the end of the day on Girl’s Day, or sometimes teachers would give everyone candy. These were fun days in school. (I went to public school, so I have no idea what it was like for private schools out here, but yeah. Good times).

Here’s a picture of the small wooden doll I got for my niece, Karma. I also got her a hello kitty coin purse and tiny hand bag to put it in. Happy Girl’s Day to all the ladies and gals out there!
