Happy Father’s Day

Happy Father's Day!

It’s been fifteen years since I’ve seen my father in the flesh. The last time I saw him, before the funeral, he was lying in his hospital bed, already gone. The hospital called to tell me my father had passed away. I begged them not to take his body away until I got there. I was 22 years old, and I wanted to see him one last time. He really did look like he was just sleeping. I got to hold his hand one more time.

In my entire life, I can’t really remember ever seeing her cry, but that day I noticed the balled-up kleenex in my mom’s hand. She’d been waiting an hour for me to get there, and didn’t allow them to take my dad away until I saw him.

I had a dream recently: My dad was walking up the street and I was walking in the opposite direction, back to my house on the other side. He was with one of the occupational therapists/nurse-type people, and he was looking down, walking slowly, smiling at something I couldn’t hear.

I didn’t get to have a lot of adult conversations with him, since he’d gotten sick when I was in the eighth grade. But I can tell you, he was one of those renaissance men. He was smart, athletic, funny, came from a farm in Lualualei, knew how to fix almost everything that broke in our home, was in the Air Force during the Korean War, and a fly-weight boxer… Played football, was one of the “Gypsies” of Waianae. (I don’t quite know what that means, but my mom used to say it). He worked at Pearl Harbor for over 30 years, starting from the bottom as a mechanic, and moving up to the position of “Planner and Estimator” during his time there. He was a first generation pidgin speaker since his parents were from Okinawa, and he was born on Molokai.. his pidgin sounded nothing like what pidgin sounds like today, and I miss it. When I hear people who speak it, I stop to listen… and smile.

My mom said they were definitely not rich when they first married, and lived on the farm in Lualualei next to grandma in a second house they built. When they had to move to town, he did things like agreed to live in the smallest apartment in the whole complex, and got a cut in the rent for doing all the maintenance & yard work for the entire building, and painting units when people moved out on his weekends (after working all week at Pearl Harbor)… he worked all kinds of jobs as a young man. He was a mover, constructed parts of Kolekole pass, so think of my dad when you drive through… and those water tanks you see when you drive out to Waianae, he also worked on those.

He was granted redress for what happened to him and his family during WWII, but never spoke of it… I remember us going to the beach, so many parks, Disneyland!, Honolulu Zoo, hotels on stay-cations, Dairy Queen in Wahiawa, McDonald’s in Mililani, all kinds of places. He loved the ocean. He loved Hawaii.

I’ve always felt my sister, who was 4-years older, got a better chance to know him. They had a special bond. My niece, is named Karma. The “K” in Karma is for “Keyei,” which my dad pronounced “K” to everyone. Karma’s middle name is “Haruko” (spring), just like my mom’s middle name. But I’ll save that for another post. My niece is a tribute to my parents, and that’s super cool.

My mom never remarried or dated. She told me once, that she had dreams, and in the dreams, she could never be with him….

Today, my sister, niece and I are putting flowers on our parents’ niche, then going to lunch. It’s really cool that my sister spends time with me on these kinds of holidays.

I’m thankful for having had such a great dad.

Happy Father’s Day!

Green Tea and Sriracha Lollipops from Lollyphile

Today, I was stoked to come home from work to find my order from Lollyphile had arrived. I got a dozen Green Tea, and another dozen Sriracha lollipops. For those of you who’ve never heard of it, or aren’t sure, it’s the Thai hot sauce with the rooster on the bottle and the green cap, made with peppers and garlic, and is pretty spicy.

Picture of my lollipop haul:

The Green Tea ended up being my favorite of the two. The Sriracha was the spiciest candy I’ve even had. At first, I had a hard time with it, but after I knew what to expect, I liked it. It did take a while for my order to ship, but there had been a notice on the site stating that due to the increased press, to expect some delays. Jason at Lollyphile was really prompt in responding to my inquiry about my order when I emailed them.

Post-surgery Squirrel

Here’s a picture of Squirrel after I got her home. Notice her left paw has been shaved for the IV during surgery. Her eyes are dilated from the pain meds, but she did good and was still affectionate and not too much different from her usual self. They extracted her two upper canines. She has stitches which will dissolve in time, but she still will need a follow-up exam to make sure she’s healing OK. Dr. Kinoshita was really cool and explained everything to me. She showed me photos of the before and after, and also saved the two teeth for me.

Squirrel was sent home with antibiotics, which she has to take for 7 days. I was told I can break open the capsules and put it into her food. She finished her food, and is lying next to me this morning as I type this.

Squirrel Might Have Surgery Tomorrow

It’s been a little over a year with my cat, Squirrel.
cat gyrations

You can read about Squirrel and how I adopted her last year in this earlier post.

I started taking Squirrel to Kaka’ako Pet Hospital this year. Her first appointment with Dr. Kinoshita, was on March 9th, 2012. Squirrel’s canines were discolored and chipped. I was told this looked like a problem that may have been there before I even adopted her. I’d never noticed, and Squirrel’s previous vet and the Humane Society never mentioned it, so I’m really glad Dr. Kinoshita caught it.

Tomorrow, I’m dropping her off at the vet early in the morning and they’re going to sedate her, (using gas), they’ll keep her on an IV, take dental radiographs of all her teeth, perform a cleaning, and from the radiographs, they’ll determine whether or not she’s a good candidate for the tooth extractions. If she’s not a good candidate, I’ll get a call to pick her up around lunch time, and at least her teeth will have been cleaned and all the x-rays will have been taken. Squirrel seems to be OK for as far as not exhibiting any signs of pain or discomfort right now. If she is a good surgical candidate, they’ll commence with the surgical tooth extractions, and I’ll probably be picking her up in the late afternoon. In some cases the teeth are fused with the bone, and the vets at Kaka’ako Pet Hospital feel it’d become too risky to perform the extraction if that’s what they see in the radiographs.

In Squirrel’s case, the gums above her canines are swollen, though she’s not really showing signs of pain and eats both dry and soft cat food with no problems, but in the future we’re worried her teeth could bother her and affect her quality of life. Since she’s only 7 years old and in relatively good health, the vet seems to think this would be a good thing to take care of if her teeth look operable in the x-rays.

I’m worried about Squirrel since any surgery has risks. There’s also a chance of infection or complications with the tooth extractions since the upper canines have nerves that go up close to the nose, but it sounds like the positives of having it done successfully now, outweigh the negatives of having to do it later when she’s older and in visible pain. I really hope all goes well. Please wish Squirrel luck tomorrow!

Buzzing in the Kitchen with Psyllium Husks and Egg Whites

Thanks to Kirstyn, at 24 Hour Fitness, I looked into a pretty neat website: ProteinPow.com and used a portion from this recipe for Psyllium Husks and Egg White Crepes to make some of today’s lunch!

My lunch consisted of 4oz. avocado, 4 oz. imitation crab, fresh salsa (Rojo’s Fresh Cut Hot Salsa), and I made my own wraps for it using the recipe for psyllium husk and egg white crepes. It was almost like eating it with a tortilla, except the flavor is a bit different, and the consistency as well, but this wrap comes packed with 5.8g Protein, at only 42.5 calories, so I’m in! I’ve been trying to get more protein in my diet, and also am really interested in other recipes on the Protein Pow(d)er site, so I’ll try to give it a go!

My lunch with homemade wrap:
Made crepe/tortillas today with egg whites and psyllium husks

In pursuit of weight loss, and general good health, I’ve been making some pretty drastic changes to my diet which began in 2011. It started out with me trying to adhere to an “Eat Clean” type of diet, which I still do sometimes, but admittedly, whenever I eat out at a restaurant, it all goes out the window since most places don’t cook food in adherence to my diet plan, which is understandable. I worry for my close friends who I imagine are getting sick of my pursuit of fish, lean meat, and balancing protein and carbs. Sorry friends! But, It’s been fun experimenting. A friend of mine told me there was no reason for me to avoid gluten unless I had an allergy to it, but I swear I feel better when I do– less bloated, and whatnot. Placebo or not, it’s good enough to convince me to limit my gluten intake.

Just thought I’d post an update on diet since I haven’t done that in a while. Happy eating!

King Kamehameha Day

This weekend celebrates King Kamehameha Day in Hawaii, which is observed on June 11th each year. King Kamehameha I, or King Kamehameha the Great, is responsible for uniting the Hawaiian Islands into the Kingdom of Hawaii.

This year, Monday is a holiday for state workers and any other businesses recognizing the holiday. The celebration began in O’ahu, with a lei draping ceremony at the statue of King Kamehameha located at Ali’iolani Hale. It’s an impressive site in person, to see the great statue and the long strands of flower and maile lei draped from his arms. There were also flowers laid at the base of the statue. You may have seen the statue featured in the opening sequence of Hawaii 5-0…

Some photos I took this weekend, in front of Ali’iolani Hale in downtown Honolulu, of the King Kamehameha statue adorned with lei for Kamehameha Day:

It’s Aloha Friday: Art in Kaka’ako

One day, as I was driving back to Waikiki after some server maintenance, I ended up in Kaka’ako. I was trying to avoid the crazy lunchtime traffic clogging the arteries of Nimitz highway, and took a left onto Cooke street, in an attempt to maneuver my way upwards to Kapiolani Blvd. Traffic in Hawaii drives me crazy. Especially lunchtime traffic and weekend traffic. It’s just wrong to have to deal with traffic in the bright light of day… but I digress…

The detour was actually cool because it introduced me to a lot of artwork along the sides of various buildings in the area of Cooke and Auahi St. There were many other great works, but here are a couple of pics I took on this beautiful Aloha Friday in Hawaii nei:

Kaka'ako: along auahi street

Kaka'ako: Aloha Key at the intersection of Cooke and Auahi

Fridays are days for feeling free. A weeks worth of work behind you, and a weekend ahead to provide a break… though usually spent cleaning in my case. But still, good times! Mahalo to Sifu for driving me out this evening to take some pics.

2012 Marathon Readiness Series

It’s that time again! Time to start getting a little more serious about the Honolulu Marathon, and my training in general. I just registered for the 808 Race Marathon Readiness Series. This year, I’m filled with more anxiety because I’ve been running less due to adding PT workouts and intervals to my training. I don’t feel ready even though my speed seems to have increased by about one minute per mile.

Here’s a photo I took during last year’s ING Direct 25K race in the series:
276/i365: ING Direct 25K - October 2, 2011

I like doing this series because it helps me get it together in time for the Honolulu Marathon, which always takes place in December. The series consists of five races, with the shortest being 15K, and the longest, 30K. The series kicks off in August, and the mileage increases incrementally  by 5K between the first 4 races, and then ends with a 1/2 marathon in November. Some people don’t like doing all the races, and choose to only do a few. I always opt for the whole series. Here’s a schedule of the races for 2012:

Boca Hawaii, Norman Tamanaha 15K (August 12 @ 6 a.m) $30.00
Runner’s Hi 20K (September 2 @ 6 a.m) $30.00
IRun 25K (October 7 @ 530 a.m) $30.00
P.F Chang’s 30K (October 28 @ 5 a.m) $30.00
Mizuno Val Nolasco Half Marathon (November 18 @ 5:30 a.m)$30.00

*For all five races, there is a $115 early entry fee through July 10th, and a $130 regular fee through August 12th.

You can download a registration form from the 808racehawaii.com site and mail it in, or you can register online via active.com
