sickness and soup and silver linings

I’m sick, so I skipped going in to work the past couple of days, and ate a lot of left-over chicken and chicken noodle soup. I’ll probably pass on Sunday’s 1/2 marathon in the BioAstin Marathon Readiness series. I’m kinda bummed, but it could be worse. I could have this cold a week before marathon instead of three, so I can’t complain too much. Hopefully I kick it and can enjoy the marathon congestion-free.My colds have a tendency to develop into sinus infections, so I become a big baby when I’m sick. I hate having to go to the doctor and take antibiotics.. and the fevers, and the pain..

Much of the day was spent forcing myself to sleep. I awoke approximately every three hours, and would eat if I woke up hungry. I’m thankful for the colder weather, otherwise my apartment would be unbearable in the day.

Highlight of the day, is I felt well enough to leave the house this evening and get some more soup. I bought some Tortilla chicken soup that has me pretty stoked, and some thai chicken soup.. also stokage there. I got tired of my plain old chicken noodle, so these will be a nice change.

I am thankful for my overall health, and the fact I have the ability to train for something as daunting as the marathon itself, so I can’t really complain. I also have some kick ass soup to try tomorrow, so… silver lining!

Bring on the Gingerbread!

more gingerbread!

Awwwwww yeah!! It’s that time of year… It’s time for the gingerbread to return to bakeries and stores across the USA. In Hawaii, the main places I’ve gone to get gingerbread, are Liliha Bakery, Saint Germain Bakery, Boulangerie Bakery, and I bought the Krusteaz Gingerbread mix at a grocery store, which allows you to choose between baking cookies or a cake. (Both were excellent)!

I am a huge fan of gingerbread. The smell of it, the flavor… the golden brown goodness of it. Some people decorate them with brightly colored frosting and other candy garnishes, which typically include a happy smile on their little gingerbread faces. Ah! Like the McRib, gingerbread is elusive due to it being a seasonal good. But unlike the McRib, which seems to be randomly released, gingerbread comes with all the happiness that Christmas brings. I always look forward to the holiday season, and my thoughts always drift towards gingerbread.

This year, I am dieting like I’ve never dieted before…. which makes me feel gingerbread intake will be at an all-time low for me this season. But I’ll be sure to post some gingerbread pics as they come. If you have any suggestions for me on good Gingerbread mixes, or places to pick some up on Oahu, or online, please leave me a comment!

Give Me Resolve, Dammit!

Welcome to the [sweet] potato party
Some sweet potatoes from my recent carbo load session this past weekend for the P.F. Chang’s 30K which got canceled due to the tsunami warning.

Lately, I’d been binging on my diet. It happens at night when I’m at home alone. I start eating random things just for the taste of it, and not because I’m necessarily hungry. It only started after I carbo loaded for two weekends in a row. I know people say you should carbo load before a long run, but in my situation where I’m trying to lose weight, or at least not gain any, it’s not working so awesome for me. Some people would probably say I should expect to gain weight, actually, and should have shed all my excess pounds by the end of summer, but since that didn’t happen, I’m still trying to lose weight while training for the marathon taking place in December.

I lose weight slowly… seems the most consistent rate I have is losing about 2 lbs. a month. Not bad, but not great. This is even when I try to watch my diet, and do 5 weight-lifting sessions, and 4 cardio sessions, including one 10+ mile run on the weekend. Sheesh.

Anyway. I am writing this in hopes that it helps me to commit to getting out of this weird, recent cycle.

Also, I took the time to google “maintenance mode” since I’m getting closer to my weight-loss goals, and boy o boy was I surprised to discover I have to pretty much exercise the same amount I have been all this time, and can only eat a few hundred calories more a day. I think I’m OK with that, though my workouts are incredibly time-consuming.

I don’t know if I want to keep doing marathons. I’m pretty committed this year unless I get injured before the marathon, but, next year… I just don’t know. Time will tell, I suppose. :)

The Art of Carbo Loading

This Sunday, I’ll be participating in the PF Chang’s 30K. I hope to be done with it in under 4 hours, but don’t want to get my hopes too high. It took me a little over 3 hours to complete the 25K, since I hit the wall. The weather in Honolulu has been really humid lately, and hopefully, that trend does not continue through Sunday!

Here’s a picture taken by Diamond Head lookout while I was out on a run:
364/i365: aloe blossoms and warm days with you

I’ve always carbo loaded the night before with a spaghetti dinner with meat sauce and garlic bread from Zippy’s, but thanks to some friendly advice from @elementalgeek and @liltree on twitter I started to become aware of the fact I should carbo load more than a night in advance. Kirstyn also gave me some advice to consume carbs two days leading into a long run. Last weekend I tried carbo loading for two days before my long Sunday run, and consumed about 400 grams of carbs each day. I did have a lot of energy on my 12 mile training run, but I also gained 2 lbs. >:(

Kirstyn suggested I cut my intake of carbs down to 200 grams a day for two days leading into the run. I plan to carbo load with poi, okinawan sweet potato, japanese sweet potato, brown rice, and rye bread. This will be my first time trying this before a race, so I hope it works out!

So Friday, and Saturday, I get to have twice as much carbs as usual. :D Awww yeah!!! For the run, I’m bringing my favorite, Hammer brand gel packets. I like Banana, Chocolate, and Espresso. I have yet to try their other flavors. I tend to down one packet every 6 miles. Each packet is 22g carbs, and 90 calories. (I didn’t have any during the 25K a few weeks ago, and hit the wall at 12 miles). I also plan to stop at all the aid stations along the way and grab some water and gatorade.

Since I’ve been trying to lose weight and gain muscle, I consume more protein than carbs, and workout almost every day. I feel stronger, and more confident because of it. My back pains are no longer an issue in everyday life. I can carry more stuff up and down the three flights of stairs to my apartment. It’s pretty cool. I avoid simple carbs: white rice, desserts, breads, candies, etc.

The morning before the race, I plan to down a smoothie at least 2 hours before start time, that will contain kale, protein powder, water, a little greek yogurt, and peanut butter.

I do miss the days of black ash falling from the skies in Mililani when they burned the sugar cane.

Link to some neat footage from around the dawn of statehood in Hawaii. I think about my mom’s stories, and the fact she and my father lived back in these days of old Hawaii. Seeing the old-school Local people is also pretty cool. Watch at the very end and listen to the narrator talk about Hawaii and the President of the U.S. Trippy! I’m somehow certain they didn’t really believe it would happen, but the fact that it did is awesome.

Sleeping with One Eye Open. Wandering Through Grocery Stores. Eating Clean and Doing Math.

Friday morning - I couldn't sleep, so I ran

It’s the middle of October. I’ve been waking up multiple times every night, wide-awake. Full of fear, happiness, anxiety. It’s been pretty weird, but also kinda cool.

Marathon is looming closer. I have to do 10+ mile runs once a week along with a bunch of shorter runs. Tonight, I was too tired to do cardio, and went grocery shopping at Safeway instead. I ended up with some papayas, okinawan sweet potatoes, frozen organics brand mangoes and raspberries, and a small box of “stevia in the raw” packets to carry around with me for my coffee.

I’m studying math lately… math I haven’t used in about 15+ years. Hopefully all the studying pays off. I’ve got plans, son. Big plans.

iPhone 5 and AT&T Text Plan Issue

I was excited to purchase my iPhone 5 back in September. Not a person to wait in long lines, I opted to purchase mine online via apple.com. When I got to the checkout process, I noticed they were forcing me to choose a different text plan from the one I had previously. I had a $5 for 200 messages a month plan. During checkout I had only two options: unlimited for $20, or pay as you go texts for .20 cents a message of text, and .30 cents for video and pictures.

Needless to say, I was distressed. This meant I could no longer keep my $5 rate, and there was no way I needed unlimited. I canceled my order, and proceeded to AT&T’s site to make my purchase there instead. Unfortunately, their site crashed on me during checkout. So, I went back to the apple site… The same thing happened to me where I could not choose my original texting plan. After much googling, I determined it would probably be OK to choose the pay as you go option and then call AT&T to adjust it.

I did an online support chat session with AT&T before my phone arrived and was assured I’d be able to keep my original text plan. However, when I saw my recent bill, it stated that beginning on September 27th, I’d be charged per text with the pay as you go text plan. I went online to chat again with AT&T support, and mentioned on 9/17/12 I was told everything would be fine. This new support person opened a case for me. In all truth, if I’d known I’d be losing the text plan, I think I might have looked into another phone.

Today, I received an email saying my issue was resolved. It didn’t mention what the resolution was, so I called just to make sure. End result: They said I can keep the $5 for 200 texts plan. I probably could have saved some time by going to an AT&T store in person to buy the phone, or I should have just got another phone. This phone needs to last me a while since I don’t intend to upgrade in another two years unless I have to. But, I think I want to try a new phone next time.

Just wanted to post this for anyone else having the same problem.

2012 iRun 25K: 10.07.12

2012 iRun 25K - 10/7/12

Yesterday, I participated in the iRun 25K, which starts in Kailua at Kailua Beach Park, goes up into Lanikai, winds back down towards the park, then heads to the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base Headquarters. On base the trail runs all the way down into a residential housing area at the bottom of a tiresome hill, and then we turned around and ran all the way back to Kailua Beach Park again. (Map)

I skipped the past two races in the BioAstin Marathon Readiness Series because I had an injury before the 15K, and I just wasn’t in the mood for the 20K. It’s a good thing I went since this was my longest run of 2012. So far, no injuries to complain about. Just some muscle tiredness in my quads and hammies. Yay!

I ate breakfast before this run since Kirstyn stressed the importance of it. I had 4 oz. okinawan sweet potato and 1/2 scoop of swanson’s protein powder at 3:30 AM. The race started at 5:30 AM, and it was my intention to eat a Hammerhead gel after running for 90 minutes, but I didn’t have any gels I could find at home, so I had to do the whole run with just that small breakfast in my stomach, and the water and gatorade offered at the aid stations situated approx. every 2/2.5 miles or so. I was so drained by the 12 mile mark, but managed to pull through. Lesson learned: Fuel is important.

Here’s a photo at Kailua Beach Park, taken after the run:
Kailua Beach

I wore a double cho pat knee strap on my right knee. I don’t know if I would have had knee issues (runner’s knee) if I had decided to go without it. Lots of people were wearing compression socks. I opted out of wearing mine, but I noticed more and more people seem to be sporting the knee-high look at these races. I’m not sure whether or not they make a difference for me. Maybe I’ll try them on a long run some time.

For all who ran the race, I hope you had fun!

Previews Before Looper

I’ve noticed a lot of people seem to be interested in which trailers were shown before Looper. These are the ones I can remember:

Lincoln
Sinister
Paranormal Activity 4
Mama
Cloud Atlas
Steel Magnolias
Red Dawn

I have to say… the Red Dawn trailer looked pretty lame to me. I think I’m biased because I grew up watching the original on cable tv… You can’t beat Swayze. Wolverines!!!

Mama and Sinister looked interesting and spooky as all get out… which means I probably won’t be able to watch those.

Steel Magnolias… might be hard to compare to the original as well, which was a pretty good movie.

I plan to see Cloud Atlas.

The Lincoln trailer looked pretty good.
