Signed up for the 2012 Ford Island Bridge Run!

One of my favorite runs each year, is the Ford Island Bridge Run. It’s a 10K across the Ford Island bridge, around Ford Island, and back to Richardson Field. I love that this race is always organized so well. From packet pickup, to race day itself, signs are always posted to direct people to the right places to go, and many volunteers are on the course… the swag at the end of the race is pretty awesome as well. I also get a kick out of running across the bridge and around the tiny island.

This year, the run is happening on 4/7/12. I’ve mailed in my entry form and am hoping to be ready in time. I’ve been going through physical therapy since February for my knee. They’ve got me running with a whole new form / gait… so it’s different and new to me. So far 4 miles is the farthest I go each time I workout. I’m afraid to push it since I had to take a break from running and don’t want further injury.

Also, this might sound weird, and is hard to explain, but when I run with the new foot placement my PT told me to try, my femur feels weird on my right leg where it connects to the hip… it’s a strange sensation. Like my right leg is crooked or something. But, I think the PT is helping a lot, so I’m hopeful I can do this run. I’m canceling on the Hapalua (Half marathon) this weekend, which I’d signed up for before my injury. I’m just not ready.

Here are some photos from past Ford Island Bridge runs I’ve participated in:

Rhyolite Historic Ghost Town, NV

On my trip to Vegas this year, I drove 100+ miles out past Beatty, to a ghost town named Rhyolite. If you don’t mind the drive, and enjoy photography or ghost towns, I highly recommend it. It’s free, and seems to be open to the public 24/7. It’s also situated right alongside the Goldwell Open Air Museum, which I wrote about earlier.

Rhyolite is an old mining town where gold was discovered in 1904. The town itself was established in 1905, but according to the flyer I picked up at the Bottle House, the population began leaving in 1910, and by 1920 the population was estimated to be 14.

There are some pretty well-preserved ruins left of an old bank, jail, school house, residence, train station, and the Tom Kelly Bottle House (a house made from bottles, and the spot where you should begin your tour and pick up a flyer).

Rhyolite is clearly marked from the main road. The road will take you up past the Goldwell Open Air Museum (you might as well check it out since it’s right there), and continues along some of the Rhyolite ruins. At the end of the street is an old train station and bathrooms. There also appears to be a few mobile homes up there.

Hina Matsuri – Happy Girl’s Day

March 3rd is Girl’s Day, and this year, I decided to get a doll for my niece to mark the occasion. She’s almost three years old, and is a great and happy kid that brings smiles to a lot of faces. It’s her charm. She’s adorable, and pretty quirky and smart. She’s got a way with people, and her smile. wow. It’s a disarming smile. I’m just a sucker for her toddler ways.

In Hawaii, a lot of people celebrate Girl’s Day in some way, whether or not they’re Japanese. Around Girl’s Day, you’ll see displays in some Local stores, and in elementary school I remember we celebrated both Girl’s and Boy’s Day in different ways… I vaguely remember making a paper koi on a stick for Boy’s Day, or one of my teachers had the boys put up our chairs at the end of the day on Girl’s Day, or sometimes teachers would give everyone candy. These were fun days in school. (I went to public school, so I have no idea what it was like for private schools out here, but yeah. Good times).

Here’s a picture of the small wooden doll I got for my niece, Karma. I also got her a hello kitty coin purse and tiny hand bag to put it in. Happy Girl’s Day to all the ladies and gals out there!

Treating my Runner’s Knee – Physical Therapy Session #2

Yesterday, 2/24/12, was my second session at Orthopedic Rehabilitation Specialists. They’re located in the Pan American building, along Kapiolani Blvd., in Honolulu HI. Here’s an old picture I took from Makaloa Street. with the Pan Am building in the background:

Shari was helping me again, and was super nice and easy to talk to. I went through 10 minutes of warm-up on the bike, followed by various stretches and exercises to get my inner-quad, and glute / hip flexors stronger. I asked her about her job as a physical therapy assistant since I’d had an interest in it myself at different points in my life. In recent years I ‘ve considered leaving my job in IT and looking into a whole new career.

Some exercises I did were side leg raises, sitting on the edge of the bed and raising my leg at the knee, leg raises while lying on my stomach, and some stretching. I also received ice and electrostimulation therapy on my left knee.

Craig, the Physical Therapist who runs the place, said I have to make sure to watch how I walk. Walk with toes pointing straight ahead, or even slightly outward, but never inwards. This is due to my anatomy. Shari said I can exercise (swimming, exercise bike and elliptical) but to take it easy and stop if there’s any pain and to use a low level setting on the exercise bike.

I’ve been instructed by them not to run. So far, I’m thinking they’re trying to get me to re-train my walking and they’ll tell me I have to also make sure to run the same way.

I do miss running…

Physical Therapy: Session #1 a.k.a. Do Not W-Sit

I was given a prescription for physical therapy two times a week, for four weeks by my orthopedic physician to treat my chondromalacia patella (runner’s knee). I attended my very first physical therapy session yesterday (2/22/12). It was an eye-opener.

The physical therapist, Craig Nagata, told me my hip flexors were weak, and my knees have a slight tendency to track inwards towards each other. These are anatomical issues I have to live with, and nothing that requires corrective surgery, but there are exercises they’re going to show me that should help me to keep running. Craig also stressed I should get a good neutral supportive shoe and change them out regularly.

Craig asked if I sat in a w-position as a kid. I said all the time. In fact, I still do it. He told me this is actually what he’s seen in many of his patients with my problem. Sitting that way over the years, and especially in my formative ones, most likely contributed to causing the knees to track inwards towards each other. So I thought I should pass this tidbit along to the Internet at large in case you or your children sit in this position. I found more than a few articles about this, but here’s one from Advance for Physical Therapy and Rehab Medicine. Shari helped me out with my exercises and also mentioned the fact that women tend to sit with their knees together because they’re taught it’s proper. (I know I was told that as a girl growing up by various adults). It turns out the best position for your knees to be in when sitting in a chair, is with feet spaced moderately apart, feet flat on the ground, knees and feet pointed straight ahead, with the knees aligned over the ankles.

An image from The Free Online Medical Dictionary of a child in the W sit position:

Trying to break life-long habits has been tough. All day long I’ve been trying to correct how I sit in chairs at work, on the floor at home, and even how I position my legs when I walk. I was told to stop running for now, and to stick to the elliptical.

Therapy consisted of a 10-minute warmup on the exercise bike followed by a series of different stretches focusing on the hip flexors and hamstrings. At the end, I had ice treatment with electrical stimulation therapy for 15 minutes. I was there over an hour total. The people were great at Orthopedic Rehabilitation Specialists.

Night With a Certain Tea

Recently, a friend took me to Lupicia, in the Ala Moana Shopping Center. When I realized the mall had closed and we were still inside the shop being assisted by two nice saleswomen, I felt both obliged and obligated to make a purchase. At first I was just gonna get some tea, but also ended up with a white ceramic tea pot, which I find quite attractive in a short and stout way.

Feeling the urge to binge last night compelled me to make my first pot of tea with the new ware. I’m trying to lose the recent 5 lbs. which hitchhiked it’s way onto my body. Totally out of my hands, (and into my mouth), of course.

The tea I brewed, was called “happiness” tea. It’s a blend of “green tea and green roobios tea flavored with fresh fruits and flower petals,” and, I am pretty happy with it.

Woe is Knee

I hurt my left foot during the 2011 Honolulu Marathon around mile twenty-one. I was limping a bit, but managed to finish with a bone bruise on the outer-edge of the bottom of my left foot. I went to a podiatrist (Dr. Gregory Morris, who is pretty good), and he prescribed rest for a couple of weeks, NSAIDs, and icing.

After waiting until my foot healed-up, I went out on short runs again, but started to feel pain in my left knee after running variable distances. Sometimes the pain would appear after the 2-mile mark, other times I could make it to 4 miles before any pain kicked in. I always stopped running once the pain hit, and walked the rest of the way. I applied ice to my knee as soon as I got home and took Advil to help reduce any swelling. I rested whenever any pains started, and did other things like go on the elliptical at the gym, or watched huge amounts of British television (Luther, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Misfits)!

By February, it’d been almost two months, so I visited Dr. Elizabeth Ignacio, who was really nice and helpful. I wish I could remember the name of the resident working with her, because she was also very nice and informative.  Both of them felt the injury on my left foot during marathon might have caused me to readjust my gait and contribute to the uneven balance in the muscles on my left leg. X-rays showed my left knee cap to be slightly misaligned and pulling towards the outer-edge of my leg. I’ve got Runner’s Knee. I’ve been prescribed Physical Therapy two times a week, for a month. I start next Wednesday and will try to document the exercises I do at PT on this site.

Here are some pics I took of my x-rays:

02.11.12: DJ Krush 20th Anniversary Tour @ Next Door, Honolulu HI

The DJ Krush 20th Anniversary Tour passed through Honolulu at Next Door, located at 43 N. Hotel St., Honolulu, HI.

For me, the best performance of the night was, by far, Mr. Lif. This was the first time I’d ever seen him perform live, and he did not disappoint. I posted a video clip below. His energy level was non-stop through his set. It was also my first time seeing Hawaii talent, Meiso. He was really good. I think I might go buy some of his stuff. It was cool when Mr. Lif called Meiso to the stage to bust a freestyle, saying he always likes to bring up the local talent at every location he tours. It was a good show overall… Monarx did a set and Timer performed a couple tracks with them.. DJ Krush was the finale. Mahalo to SkyHI Productions.

Some video and photos taken at the show:

Goldwell Open Air Museum

It’s hard to believe that only last week, I was in Las Vegas, NV on a Vacations Hawaii tour package. If you ever find yourself looking for something to do in Las Vegas, Nevada, and have some time to kill, (and you don’t mind driving 115 miles each way) I’d recommend checking out The Goldwell Open Air Museum.

Out amongst the mountains, are large sculptures that pop out of the landscape. There was a tiny office, which had pamphlets for visitors that we used to conduct a self-guided tour. You’re welcome to visit 24/7.

I could say more, but instead I’ll just show you some photos I took:
